Today’s disparate socioeconomic conditions underscore the need for equity in testing. School psychologists must be able to assess cognitive ability in a way that allows all students equal opportunity to demonstrate how well they can think to solve problems. Unfortunately, traditional intelligence tests are influenced by what a student knows. This course examines how to evaluate basic psychological processes fairly and how school psychologists may utilize that data for eligibility determination and intervention planning.

Better understanding of equity
I will be honest, while I am well aware of bias, equity, and equality issues, I really did not have a true understanding of what each of these means, how it impacts our students. I knew that I needed to learn more about this topic in order to better serve my students. This training helped me understand some of the problems of traditional tests, as well as ways to change our practices as school psychologists to overcome this issue. Would highly recommend for any school psychologist, regardless of expertise, there is definitely something in this training for everyone!
